Kids Beds Bunk
Bunk beds provide drama to children's rooms, and they also provide them with an excitement. Ms. Keenan adds a shelf to hold books or a reading light in each sleeping space to make bunk beds more appealing to children.
Many of our bunk beds for kids can be converted into two twin beds. This is a great option when you plan to move them into their own bedroom at some point. Choose from finishes like brushed white, gray and rich walnut.
Stairs and ladders
You can choose between stairs or ladders when you are choosing bunk beds for kids. Ladders can be installed easily and are less expensive. They also offer an easy way to get into the top bunk bed. They are more secure than stairs, as they provide a wider surface area for children to walk on and have an integrated handrail. Ladders also usually have grooves in the steps which can prevent slippage while climbing up or down the bed.
If you like the design and look of stairs, they could make an elegant addition to your bunk bed. Staircases can also be utilized in rooms with limited space since they do not protrude like ladders. They are often made of wood or metal and can match the various styles of bedrooms. Some staircases have integrated storage drawers that are an ideal way to expand the size of bunk beds.
bunk bed for kids to take into consideration when choosing between stairs and a ladder is the age of your child. While it is recommended no one sleep on the top bunk before the age of 6, children who are comfortable with vertical climbing may be better off with stairs than a ladder. If you are planning to use your bunk bed for guests, such as younger children or adults who have limitations in mobility, it's best to choose stairs.
A straight staircase that runs along the side of the bed will require 95" of space each side. If you don't have this much room, you can choose a u-shaped staircase that doesn't require as much space but still provides a safe and secure method of getting to the top bunk. Certain beds offer the option of distancing the stairs when they're not in use, which further reduces their footprint and makes them more suited for rooms with multiple uses. You can also find staircases that connect to the end of the bed and eliminate the requirement for a separate handrail and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails let children climb into and out of their beds on their own and provide them with an experience of freedom and confidence. But they must be positioned properly, making sure that there are no gaps or movement occurs between rails of the guard and bed frame. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing guard rails and be sure to inspect them on a regular basis to ensure they are not loose or have holes that could cause the entrapment.
One of the most important safety concerns for bunk beds is to keep them away from electrical devices as well as other objects that could turn into projectiles when your kids play or sleep. Set bunk beds far from windows to prevent an injury to fall risk if your children get up on the upper level.
A safety feature you may want to consider is a night light for the ladder; this can help to illuminate the ladder's path up and down in the event that children awake at night and need to go to the bathroom, or wake up during a storm, and need to make their way from their bedroom safely.
Another excellent security feature for bunk beds is a safety net which can be installed on the top level to keep children from falling over while they are asleep or playing. This is a great idea for older children, who are more likely to sleep in the top bunk.
The guardrails should be secured to the bunk beds and can't be removed without tools. The openings in the guardrails over the mattress foundation must not be more than 3.5 inches to avoid entrapment and strangulation. To test this, place the wedge block as shown in Figure 1 into each opening in the lower edge of the topmost member of the guardrail and above the mattress's underside foundation. Apply 33 lbf (147 N) in a perpendicular direction to the plane of the largest edge of the block for a minute.
It's a good idea tell your children not to hang anything on the guardrail or ladder, such as belts, clothes, or sporting equipment. Instead, you should use a rack for clothes to stop these items from becoming a strangulation risk for your child. Make sure that no more than one child sleeps on the top bunk. This can lead to a risky imbalance and even falls.
Mattresses
Be aware of your child's age and size when selecting a mattress to fit a bunk bed. A bunk mattress should last for at least eight years or until siblings do not share a bedroom, so you'll want to pick one that's designed to grow with your child while still providing adequate support as they get older.
Bunk mattress sizes are usually twin or full-size, and there are plenty of alternatives that will accommodate either. If your kiddos suffer from asthma or allergies choose an hypoallergenic mattress that has a dust mite barrier and a cover that wicks moisture. Mattresses that have an antimicrobial coating will shield the foam against harmful bacteria and germs.
The feeling of your mattress is crucial. Kids generally weigh less than adults, which means they need mattresses that feel firm but is also comfortable. Many hybrid and latex mattresses have a firm side and a soft side to accommodate both children's needs.
Memory foam mattresses are great for kids but we don't recommend them as they tend not to cool properly and could be a strain on the spines of small children. You should consider a hybrid or a latex mattress instead, which can provide solid support with cooling infusions to ensure that your child or guest asleep cool and comfortable.
Low-profile mattresses are often the best choice for bunk beds for children. They are designed to be slimmer than regular mattresses and to increase safety rail height for the top bunk. They eliminate "filler" materials to provide the highest quality and slim designs.
If your child wants to try a mattress that's more substantial than a standard mattress, think about an hybrid or innerspring model with comfort layers above that can be removed or replaced as the child grows. These models can provide you with an idea of the mattress's durability as your child grows. You can also add a mattress skirt or bed pad to stop it from sliding. Some beds have side rails or lip built in to prevent this.
Storage

Bunk beds are a great alternative to save space in shared children's rooms. Bunk beds are also a less expensive alternative to buying two full-sized single beds. Some bunks offer the option of adding an trundle bed that can be tucked away beneath the bottom bunk when it is not being used.
Consider installing a kids bedroom furniture set that includes bookshelves, desks, or dressers to maximize storage and space in a room that has bunk beds. This will allow you keep all of your child's clothes along with toys and other personal items in one location instead of stuffing everything into chests or closets that are overstuffed. The sets of kids bedroom furniture are sold at a variety of retailers. They meet federal safety standards.
Stacking bunks can provide an ideal playground for children as kids can transform the spaces below into hidden hideaways or cosy play areas. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked 6 bunks in this room for the ultimate kids space that can be used for sleeping, playing and even superhero cape twirls. The room has the bubble wallcovering of Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the ultimate getaway.
If you aren't able to install stairs for your stacked kids bunk the ladder could be a simple solution. The ladders are constructed with a combination of Single Socket Tee Flange, Single Socket Tee, and 90 Degree Side Outlet Tee fittings and can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between rungs of a ladder to make it easier for children to climb. The ladder rungs are also placed directly on the ground instead of above to aid in climbing.
Another way to maximize space in a room that has bunk beds is to install loft kids beds which can be lowered to just above the floor. This allows you to slide desks, dressers or toy chests beneath the beds on top. This is a real maximize of space and is a great choice for smaller bedrooms or in a big family home where the beds need to be able to accommodate several sleepers.
